Jeff,
Following your description, my advanced control is says" "advanced control
disabled checked". I can't uncheck it. I have a sound blaster as well.
I noticed this problem way back with a ham radio based chat program. At one
time that advanced control was working, then it stopped and now that options
says advanced control disabled and is checked. Any ideas?

Which operating system? If XP you need to turn on advanced controls
before it will appear. Press alt in the volume control window and arrow
to advanced controls and make sure it is checked. If on Vist/Windows 7
Mic Boost is not available on many sound cards due to driver limitations.
