Thanks Traci. I use both a desktop and occasionally a laptop. I have not
mastered the laptop with Window-Eyes. Again, thanks.

Yea, I figured out the mouse to pointer. Boy, at first this is confusing!

Though I suppose in the long run it'll be nice to use the same key strokes
as the standard keyboard. Hmmm, I'll wait and see how it is to navigate a
table.

Louis, you use the fn key then the letters u i o are the center of the
numpad. If I understand this correctly, pretend they are 4 5 6, then go up
and down from there. Does that make sense?

BTW, that insert-1 key describer mode helped out!

Traci

PS. On my laptop, the fn key is between the control and windows key on the
lefthand side.

Chip,

I missed part of this response. How do you get a laptop keyboard to
simulate a desktop keyboard-how do you get the function of the numeric key
pad on a laptop?

Hi Tracy,

Yes, absolutely it works for the mouse movement keys, and anything done on
the keypad. there's even an fn key combo which is itself the insert key, so
if you're already trying to get some numeric keypad combo, you can use it if
you need insert plus a numeric keypad key.

the key describer (insert plus 1) will help you identify what all the keys
are when you hold down the fn key and press them; they're centered around
the u i and o keys, which are taking the place of the 4 5 and 6 keys of a
numeric keypad).

hth,

Chip

Wow, I've never tried it that way. Does that work for things like using the
mouse, top left and right?

Anyway, I just went into the laptop.txt and manually made my changes. I
only change a half dozen key strokes, and it makes the laptop use so much
easier.

Thanks,

Traci

I'm afraid this is just one reason why many of us choose not to use the
laptop layout. I'd say most of us use the standard layout, and have learned
how to use the fn key on modern laptops to simulate the numeric pad keys.

doing it this way also allows you to get help from others, and understand it
if they mention specific WE keystrokes which will help you.

Subject: laptop layout question

Hi list,

I submitted this question to support, but I imagine they are slammed today,
so heres hoping someone on the list has an idea.

I have upgraded to we7.2. I use the laptop layout and I have my old laptop
layout file. I need somehow to merge the 2 files.

I can tell my old layout is missing a lot of info in comparison to the new,
so I don't want to do a simple copy paste.

Is there any clever way to do this, without manually rewriting my
preferences?

Hope this makes sense,

Traci
