Here is yet another work around. Jamal Mazrui's IE Max script with its "alt-u" hotkey allows one to display and capture the url of a link when it is focused. Upon occasion, when some of the other mentioned suggestions fail, I take this url and either paste it into the run dialogue or into IE itself.
