The ability to create your own keyboard layouts hasn't been removed. We
just don't ship it automatically because it was too confusing for most
people. If you like the layout, feel free to modify the keys to your
liking. I will say, however, that the laptop layout was updated
extensively, and with the ability to use Caps Lock as an Insert key, it
provides a very good alternative to the default layout.
