David,
Your request for an outstanding assistive technology is
commendable. However, you aren't suggesting that GW
develope a Clapper App are you?

Subject: Re: WINDOW-EYES TALKING BY ITSELF

It is not as much the fact that Window-Eyes gets lonely. He,
or is it she,
wants to make sure you don't feel lost and forgotten.

In the next version of WE, could there please be a setting -
preferably
under the main menu tree - that would make the computer cook
my dinner,
handle my laundry, and vacuum the floor. THAT, would be what
I call
ASSISTIVE technology!!!

Version 9 of Window-Eyes, should further improve, and let
the PC run down to
the store, and pick up some extra Ice Cream for me, now that
the warm
weather finally has decided to show up for a few days.
Shouldn't be all that
hard after all, specially for all users who have invested in
one of those
small net books.

Hey you, who originally posted this thread! It wouldn't
happen that you are
using the netbook? In such a case, it might happen you just
found the new
feature GW has implemented since version 7, but who noone
seem to have
discovered yet. And, agreed, it isn't very well documented
in the manual
either. It is called 'Where Is My PC'. Since so many pieces
of electronics
have entered our modern-day homes the last decade or so, and
they all tend
to shrink in size, it really become a challenge for the
blind user to refind
his cell phone, keyring, wallet, and of course his computer.
Even with a
good old - fairly sized - desktop computer, just finding
your way around
your home, might be a challenge for many a user. Just
imagine how big a
number of blind people have banged their head in the
doorpost, or maybe even
injured far more, when they were searching their way from
the dining table,
and back to their computer. Oh yes, there is small
electronic gadgets on the
market that would help you out, but that would namely add on
yet another
load of things to refind, when you were searching for the
remote for the
finder-equipment. As we all have come to know, GW is
extremely eager to meet
the needs of the blind users. And that, in many cases, even
before the user
himself will know his needs. So, back when they developed
version 7, or was
it 7.13 (can't remember for sure), they included this 'Where
Is My PC'
feature. What you are experiencing, is exactly what that
feature is designed
for. Every so often, the PC will check to see if you are
still in front of
it, and make extensive use of it. If not, It presumes that
you have made an
attempt to go to the bathroom, but got lost on your way
back, and now
hopelessly are messed up in between all your wifes dresses
and jewelry. So,
it calls out, repeatedly parroting a predefined phrase.

Don't despair, though! Here is the undocumented hotkeys, to
operate the
service.
1. To turn the feature on or off, hit and hold down all the
following keys
simultaneously. Alt-Ctrl-Shift-Win-W-I-M-P.
2. To change the predefined phrase, that the PC will parrot
when you leave
it unattended for a moment, hit the above mentioned key
combination, but
make sure to include the question-mark as well. In other
words,
Alt-Ctrl-Shift-Win-W-I-M-P-?. You will be presented with
five edit boxes,
where you can enter all the settings for the frequency of
the call outs, the
actual phrase to speak, what activities should indicate that
you are back,
and which phone number or Email address to be used, to warn
the rest of the
world, in case the PC determines that you are likely
submerged in the ice
cream container, or have 'fallen' to sleep under your couch.
Useful enough,
if you are enjoying such activities!
3. At the end, you have to enter a password. This to make
sure, you really
know what you are doing. Again, GW have met with the
challenges the blind
are facing in their daily life. The password is one big
string,
non-case-sensitive, and pretty easy to enter. Simply enter
one long string,
made up of all the names of the people working at GW, that
you possibly can
remember. Like AaronDougRaulMikeSteveJeremy. The great
benefit hereof, is
that the password you enter, is being checked up with GW's
homepage, and the
more names you entered, the higher score. The amount of
scores, will give
you extra points on your SMA.

And if this doesn't make you lost, at least it made GW
sweat; and maybe
even gave you a smile!

Enjoy your conversation with the computer next time!
