I agree with the solution offered below and have just gotten into the habit of 
"Redrawing" the screen every time I reply to a message.

I'm using the latest version of Thunderbird with WE, I wouldn't say its plain 
sailing as there are a few little qwerks to get around but they're fairly 
straight forward, usually I use Thunderbird on the Windows computers with NVDA, 
works and always has worked flawlessly with Thunderbird to my knowledge.
