Hi,

Perhaps you don't know about this, but most modern laptops have an extra key
labeled "fn". On my Dell Inspiron laptop, it's on the bottom row, second
from the left. It's used as a modifier (like control or shift), and one of
the things it does is to make the keys centered around the u, i, o, and p to
act like a numeric pad when you hold down the fn key and press one of these
keys. You can use the window-eyes "key describer" mode (insert-1) to help
you work out where all the numeric pad keys are when using the fn key.

With just a little practice, you can use the standard keyboard layout this
way.
Your other choice is to use the "laptop" keyboard layout of window-eyes;
which changes a lot of the keyboard commands you use so that they don't
require numeric pad keys. The disadvantage here is that if someone gives
you a key combination to use to solve some problem, or you look something up
in the manual, you may not be able to use that combination because you're
using laptop keyboard layout.

Dell has also assigned some functions to key combinations involving the fn
key; you should try googling on your model of laptop and variations of "fn
keys" to see if you can find a list of these. I believe just as an example,
fn-downarrow dims the screen, and fn-uparrow brightens it (one saves you
battery life, and the other allows sighted people to see your screen).

There's nothing at all I can think of that would stop you from downloading
files (if you're getting on the internet that is).

If this is your first exposure to windows 7, I believe you may want to get
the free textbook published by access technology institute on using windows
7 with window-eyes. You can get it from the web site:

hth,

Chip
