Some folks believe in following the law and some folks don't. Those that don't follow the law and legally purchase what they use, make efforts to find their freebies. And yes, we are lucky that we in the west have a better lifestyle than others in the world, but that doesn't justify breaking the law. If the producer of Hope decides, because too many people are using his software and not paying him, he, as a businessman, can make choices himself. One of those choices is to just not provide the software, and in that case, it doesn't matter what we in the west or those inIndia do, we won't have the option of using non-existent software. And as Chris said, there are free alternatives for screen readers, so those who cannot afford them have a choice. It doesn't matter what their house cost or how they heat their water.

Yes and I don't understand the attitude Of so many on the list that think they have to waste everyone's time with their holier than thou attitude. Does anyone really believe that posting these messages is going to persuade anyone to buy hope if they don't want to do so. I mean it is 10 dollars. so clearly people can afford 10 dollars. You are going to have someone who doesn't want to pay and isn't going to but the overwhelming majority of people will pay $10 for software which works as well as hope does. However, that won't stop people from repeatedly making the same point on the list. in other words many messages denouncing the behavior of a few people
who get a free copy of the software.
however, since you brought up the topic of affordability of software why don't you comment on the millions of blind people around the world who cannot afford screen readers. They will never in there lifetime be able to have what we do in the states. Even at $400 for an individual license it is far out of the reach of these people. However, let them eat cake right an do with out. That is something worth talking and thinking about not the absurdly few that get free hope. The blind people of India much less Pakistan or Algeria can only dream of having jaws or window-eyes. Of course, those relatively few blind people who have jobs and therefore, scrape enough money together to get a computer and then the screen reader on top of that They don't have washers dryers refrigerators, garbage collection or built in water heaters. They take their bath in a bucket with a heating element to heat the water. Again these are the employed blind people in the village in India much less Pakistan or china. However, keep those profits rolling in and keep talking about a few people
getting hope as if the point hasn't been made a hundred times.
Oh and for perspective a house is being bought for $3000 and it will take another $1500 to fix it up to living standards. This is from someone who happens to have enough gold to sell to buy the house. normally he would not be able to ever afford that. Even if we take that as a price of $5000 dollars a house costs 11 times what the screen reader. does. Even if you double that the house costs 22 times what the screen reader does. In this country the screen reader would cost $5000 dollars. So maybe the screen reader makers should raise their prices to $5000 and let's see how many Americans could afford that. Lets see how many blind people would stick with their attitude of well just buy the darn thing. I think cracking would go up quite a bit. Of course you would have those that denounce it while doing it themselves.

If one can't afford a $10 piece of software, how did they afford their
computer? I never understood this mentality that says that people
should get things for free that others have to pay for. Time after time
I hear people saying that they can't afford something, but they have the
latest cell phone, note taker, etc. Christopher is a college student
who probably can't afford a lot of things either, and he just wants to
make some extra money while helping out at the same time. Being an
adult means assuming adult responsibility.

Why would you offer to give away software that is made available to
blind people for $10? You, and those who take advantage of your offer
are stealing from Christopher Toth, who wrote that program and made it
available to us at a very reasonable price, as well as from the
Pandora company. Shame on you. Is there also a link in that dropbox
of y ours for Window-Eyes?
