Sadly this does appear to be the case for me as well.
If I type for example "thu" after about 4 seconds WE announces
"Mozilla Thunderbird"
With NVDA the results are spoken with the same search result almost
instantly.
I have done this on both my desktop which is a Core2Quad, 2.3 GHZ
4GB ram, Windows 7 64 bit and my Ultrabook which is a Quad Core I5
2.3GHZ 4GB Ram with Windows 7 64.
Maybe that's an unfair comparison as NVDA doesn't have quite the same
load of features or the frame work of apps and such and is probably the
most responsive of all the Windows screen readers.
However if the response time of WE could be improved it would be
helpful. Of course this is always the wish of a user right? Go faster!
Maybe in the case of the start menu it's a simple enough matter to fix,
I am not enough of a WE master to make that determination. Not that it
isn't useable it is just a bit sluggish.

I also find this to be the case. Just tap a couple letters and anyone
should see this. which is, not the case with any other major screen
reader. when the results show, is when with other screen readers get a
little sluggish but do not go catatonic, as WE seems to.
(win 7 64 bit) window-eyes 8.B2.

Typing in the start menu edit box is still very sluggish in beta two.
