If you only want to use iTunes to manage content on your iPhone, you can do that much easier on the phone itself. You can download apps and other content by using the App Store, and iTunes apps on your phone. You can download and install software updates directly on your device, and you can use iCloud, Apple's cloud based storage to back up your device, and you can restore that backup directly to your phone. I haven't used iTunes on the PC in ages. Of course, there are many other uses for iTunes, but if all you want to do is to download stuff to your device, iTunes on the PC is not necessary.
