The protected mode check box is under Edit, Preferences. The shortcut is Control-K. When you land in the list hit S until you land on Security (enhanced). It will be right after one that says only Security.
Tab down and uncheck open documents in protected mode at start up.
Acrobat 11 definitely runs quicker and smoother on my system.

Tom

I think I may have found the cause. It's something to do with the
program being in protected mode or some such by default. I did
follow the instructions given in the popup dialogue box but still
couldn't find the relevant checkbox or radio button in the preferences.
I have now gone back to version 10 of the adobe reader which you can
    download from
    http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/otherversions/
There is a small form to complete prior to download. There are three
    combo boxes
operating system, language and adobe reader version
and a checkbox to tick if you wish to also install google crome
When you run the program for the first time, you're asked to keep or
disable protected mode. I chose run with protected mode disabled.

Good luck and if you need any more help drop me a line.
    Sincerely,
    Matt

I'm also finding that Adobe isn't reading for me. I'm using W. E.
8.1 and Xp. If the latest adobe doesn't work, is there a site
where I can get the older edition? And can I download and install
    over this one?
