MSConfig is your best friend.

----i am not sure how this is designed but, see if this helps.
  1. From the run dialogue, type MSConfig.

  3. Ctrl-tab to the start up area and determine what programs you need and
what ones you don't need buy unchecking and checking boxes.
  4. Once that is done, tab to apply and restart the system.

  Subject: ot: slow start up

I have a new Lenovo laptop with very good specs but it’s taking an eternity
to boot up. I am running Windows 7 and W E 8.1. I suspect a number of programs
are being started that I don’t usually need. How can I determine what programs
are being run at start up and stop those running which are not needed?
  Thanks for any help.
