Their purpose is to help you quickly navigate to major sections of a Web
site, such as Search, Navigation and Main, Thus the name Landmark.

Subject: do landmarks serve any useful purpose

I'm wondering if all the landmarks like search, banner, navigation serve any
useful purpose? It seems to just add more junk and clutter to a page. If
there's no useful purpose to them, how about a verbosity setting to turn them
off?
