I have had the same problem a couple of times lately.  It was
particularly annoying because I was in the middle of an audio file
with Windows Media Player, and the only thing I could figure out to do
was restart the computer, which, of course, lost my place in the
rather lengthy file that Windows Media Player was playing.  Why does
this process you use work?  What does ALT+N invoke?
