I agree and wondered the same thing when the subject came up.

I use Windows 7 at home all the time and use that search box to my advantage
to find what I want quickly.  Don't know what I would do without it. Like it
better than XP at this point as I use XP at work.

I don't believe so and for the life of me I don't know why one of 7's most
useful features should be removed.  You can learn to use the search box to
your advantage if you choose to do so.  The start menu in 7 is different for
sure.  If there is a program you use all the time you can quickly add it to
the desktop from the results list from your search.  IE is not on the
desktop by default so if you want to put it on the desktop you can use the
context key on the result to add it to your desktop.  I still use XP because
two of my machines have it.  I have a laptop with 7 and have found that
there are quite a few things I really like better with it, one of them being
the search box on the start menu.  Again it's different but if you give 7 a
chance you just may find you like it better once you get used to how it is
structured.
