My issue is that We was always reading slide one. Reinstalling the factory set files sort of fixed the problem. I need to press the spacebar or enter key three or four times on some slides to get them to advance.

Once in slide show, you can type the number of the slide you want to go to and hit enter. This will take you to the slide immediately. Again, you may have to turn on browse mode to read the slide.
