Hi Jed: I use Gmail all the time and have no problem with Basic HTML mode. But I know that it looks confusing at first. There should be a link on your page called "basic html mode". Press the Enter key on that, and then there should be a link or button on the page to set it as the default. If you do not find those links, sometimes a security thing comes up and asks you for a mobil phone number. You should be able to skip that part. I think there is a link or button which allows you to do that. I hope this is of some help to you. Kevin Huber
