I have seen times where this has not happened and you need to tell Windows
updates to go and installed the latest update for this product from the
optional updates item in Windows Update. But yes, the updating for this product
is through Windows updates.

Hi Jim,
Microsoft Security Essentials updates automatically when you run Windows
update, whether you choose to do it manually or it is done automatically.
You're just being notified of a new update.
