I unfortunately cannot afford tech support via phone right now, as I'm a Window-Eyes for Office user, and when I did call and spoke to Dave, he directed me over here.
So, here is the situation. I am running the factory default installation for all my set files, as far as I know. I did go back and update them just to be sure. I'm experiencing something kind of strange. I recently obtained an Asus X551M, I think it is, Windows 8 64 bit laptop. I since have updated it from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, or would that be 8.11. Basically, it's the very most recent version of the Windows 8 family. I'm also using Window-Eyes 8.4 with a license of Eloquence. I'm not sure that would cause a breakage bug here, but I just want you all to know my setup just in case. So, I have my settings set so that I'm using the laptop keyboard layout. I do have a numeric keypad, but the way the keyboard is designed makes the keypad incredibly difficult to use. I won't bore you all with those details unless you want to know. Anyhow, I used to have a demo copy of W E 7.1 which I ran on an XP 32 bit machine way back in the days. I'm wonderring if something's changed since then. So it used to be, I could hit numpad 8 and numpad 2 to move my mouse pointer to previous line or next line, or in the case of the laptop, I could hit capslock u, or caps lock o. I'm saying the letter o, not the zero key, just for clarification. Then in the laptop layout, j k l were my words, and m comma period were my characters. This still seems to be the case, but here's the deal. It used to be that I could freely rome around my screen with the mouse pointer. So, here's a great example! Say that I am on a folder in Windows Explorer, or... File Explorer as they now call it in Windows 8. Same thing though basically. If I press alt+enter to go into the properties of that folder, I used to then could hit numpad 7 for a top left with the mouse pointer, then I could use num pad 2 to read down the window. Of corse, on the laptop layout, that would be alt+home to go top left, then capslock+O to move down line by line. This would allow me to see the entire properties dialog box. I could see the size, the date modified, etc. Now, however, with the setup I have on Windows 8, I'm noticing that it's behaving a bit differently. I don't know if this is a Windows 8 thing, or if you guys at GW Micro have changed something without my knowing, or what. Basically, now, it gets stuck. Say I land on the OK button. If I then try doing a top left, I still seem to be focused only on the OK button. If I try moving word by word, all I get is OK button. Character by character only allows me to see the o, and the k. Trying to move line by line just gives me a bwonk, an d won't let me move virtically. I'm aware of the ctrl+shift+B command, and though I don't know which setting this needs to be on, I've tried all of them between focused window, active window, user window, etc. I got no results that appeared any different regardless which one I used. Even full screen isn't working. So, what's my ultimate question as we're going around here in circles? Just this: has something changed in the way you navigate a window with the mouse pointer? Have I missed something? It looks like now it's only letting me navigate with the mouse through the currently focused object. It's almost as if the mouse pointer is getting restricted to the current control. What my ultimate goal is, is to be able, and please pardon me mentionning the other two screen readers, but it's all I can compare to. I want to be able to use the mouse pointer like I would the fish... uh... sorry... I mean, JAWS cursor, or like I'd use screen review with the NVDA navigator. In other words, I want to be able to freely move the mouse pointer through the entire window, not just that one object. Here's another example. Not that I need the mouse pointer here, so this is kind of a bad example, but, it still proves my point. If I hit windows key+R to go to the run dialog. I here type the name of program, document, or folder and windows will open it for you. OK, I'm then sitting on the edit box to type, right? Well, I only with my mouse pointer can review that text field. I can't move virtically down past it to the ok and cancel buttons. I can't move up virtically to the message about type the name of a program, yoddie yodda. It's like it's stuck in that one object, which of corse in this case is the edit box. I can't move freely to the other parts of the window. Again, Office 365 subscription, Window eyes for Office 8.4, Windows 8.1 64 bit, Asus 551M laptop, and I'm on the laptop layout. If any of the sighted staff on the list need it, let me know how to get it to you, and I'd be happy to take a screen shot of any screen you all need to see of my settings. I'm not totally sure how to make a screenshot, so if that be necessary, please talk me through how to do it. Otherwise, does anyone up here know what on earth I am missing? I don't have access to Windows 7, and I can't install Office over here on this old xp machine, so I have no way of running W E over here to see if it is only a Win 8 thing. It would be interesting to see if any Windows Vista, or Windows 7 users also experience this. I just don't know if this is a bug, or more likely, me just not knowing what the heck I'm doing. Chris.
