You didn't mention the version of Office you are using, so I'm answering for Word 2010, but I'm also including the keyboard shortcuts that worked in 2003 and still work in 2010.
Inserting a table: Go to the Insert Ribbon. Tab over to the Tables group drop down and hit the alt plus down arrow keys to open the options list. You'll be presented with a grid of options that say things lit 1 by 4, 2 by 3, and so on. The first number you hear is the number of columns and the second is the number of rows. You can always add to this if you find you need more, but this creates your base table with the columns evenly spaced across the page. If you'd prefer, you can also arrow up a few times once you open that drop down list and you'll get an Insert Table option which opens the old style dialog box where you can type the number of columns and rows. And, if you are really keen on the old keyboard shortcuts, you can still type Alt A, then I, then T in fairly quick succession and it will open that little dialog box. Selecting a row or column: Easiest way I know is to place your cursor within the row or column you want to select. Then, hit the application key on the keyboard and arrow down to the Select option, the chose an option from the submenu. And, in case you wanted to know, you can add columns and rows by positioning your cursor in a cell adjacent to where you want the new column or row and hitting the application key on your keyboard. Go to the insert option and chose from the sub options. Again, the old menu keyboard options from 20033 work in 2010, but you have to remember them. I changed to Office 2010 recently enough that I still recall a few of the ones I use the most such as Al + A, then I then A to insert a row above current position.
