I've tried templates/macros, what amounts to apps nowadays for Word Perfect
and Word in the past and they can work well, but if one is going to do a lot
of writing in specialized formats, I really think specialized software is
worth it. I've tried many including Scriptware, Movie Magic Screenwriter and
Final Draft. All of them were accessible at the time I was using them, and
Final Draft was the one I liked best. They tend to offer not only built in
proper formatting for screenplay format, but for stage play, animation
scripts, video game scripts and about any other type of writing that has
built a formatting standard. The make it easy to do things like create
plotting index cards, stage direction and practical production scripts and a
lot of other things. Some of them offer tools to help move through the
production process. Some, like Movie Magic offer other software packages
like Movie Magic Scheduler that do even more for a project moving through
production. Most users probably don't need a lot of this, I know I don't
plan on self-producing any projects in the near future, but the packages
that include some of these tools can allow one to analyze one's story from a
different point of view and do things like help develop a good pitch or
query letter, something that can be as or more important than having a great
manuscript to submit, since you generally can't submit without querying
first.
Just some things to think about. I personally don't have a current version
of any specialized software, I haven't been writing as much as I should
lately, but I am definitely looking into it under the theory that having the
tools will give me one less excuse to not get any work done.
Regards,
chris

It's still available at
https://www.scriptware.com/
There is a link to a demo on the main page.
I've seen instructions on the web for creating Word styles that handle a lot
of the formatting chores. With Word's good accessibility, this approach
seems pretty appealing.

Hope this helps.

I used ScriptWare. Haven't heard of it for awhile. Anyone know it or
what the status of it is?

Jim, You can read about and get "The Guide" from Source Forge.
Criss, the only PC-device that I can see is using a .rtf based apple app
and save the documents to DropBox or OneDrive.
P.S Since a play can bee seen as structured into Headings:Hamlet and the
Sub headings are Acts, the sub sub headings are scenes and the sub sub
sub headings are Character speeches and even below that you can have a
child page with stage directions, you can write the complete play in the
Guide. Then you send the flash drive with the app and $2000. to your
favorite transcriber and you're done!
