Excellent comments from John S. re the state of the screen-reading art a few days back. On an under-powered Win-8 machine, I can report improvement by using the following Firefox settings:
In the General tab under Advanced, say No to hardware acceleration and smooth scrolling. Say Yes to autoscrolling. Of course, No to "Check my spelling as I type," Yes to "Use cursor keys." The biggy here is probably "No" to acceleration; it didn't matter under Windows 7. I'm sure we're all anxious to avoid a situation wherein IE is perceived as GW's browser and Firefox is seen as NVDA's. On those settings, have also not obtained good results when having FF or IE for that matter check on its own default-browser status.
