First off, someone sent me a private reply requesting a return receipt. 
This request, with my Web mail, went away too quickly for action, thus
illustrating the problem.  I was also unable to read even the sender's
name within the msg body, let alone the message itself.  A version
probably is in the latest digest.

Second, here's a partial answer to my own question:  Under "Applications"
in the advanced settings, there is a list of programs with Okay buttons. 
In my particular case there were 45; one of these was Quicktime Plugin
7.5, which had been mysteriously blocked.

This seemed to solve the particular problem; however, it doesn't solve
issues with, for example, a return receipt request such as I received in
reply to the original post.
