Dear all,
Perhaps one of the more obvious ideas I ought to have tried before writing to the list, installing updates in small numbers, two or three at a time, rather than all 140 (in my case) in one sitting, which here at least causes Windows Explorer to freeze and the only exit was to switch to safe mode and so on and so forth. In other words, sighted help probably necessary.

So, there we are folks, a rather cumbersome and time consuming remedy, but better than the alternative, unless, of course, someone has a better suggestion.

Sincerely, Matthew
