I have reassigned my read status key to numpad-insert-numpad-page down.
This has been what I have used for a long time. For some reason, it
does not work in Thunderbird if the Thunderbird App is running. Also,
when writing a message in Thunderbird, the last character typed will
continue to speak if the right arrow is pressed. This makes it more
difficult to see how many spaces one has typed. Usually, I hear nothing
when at the end of the typing. Of course, I guess I could left-arrow and
see how many spaces are before the non-breaking space. Unfortunately,
this does not help with letters. If I right-arrow, after typing a
letter, it repeats the last letter typed.
