Yes, this is how I am disabling it, but every time I start Thunderbird
again, both options are checked again. They stay unchecked during a
session, but as soon as I close Thunderbird and re-open it, they are
checked again.

Melissa,
I'm running TB 31.2 and aren't seeing this problem. When I open View,
Layout, it says, Message pane F8. If I hit Enter and look again it
says, Message pane F8 checked. So I hit Enter to uncheck it again. It
has never come back on for me. The same goes for the Quick filter tool
bar.

I have recently installed Thunderbird 31 and went to view, layout and
turned off the message pane. However, every time I start Thunderbird,
that is re-enabled along with the quick filter bar. I did some googling
and they said that you have to drag down the splitter until the message
pane collapses. Is there a way to do this with WindowEyes, or is there
another way to get this permanently turned off?
Thanks,
