Felix,

It's true this set of steps won't let anything else run; however, what
exactly is going to occur the next time you are told that you have 3 updates
waiting? Say two from GW, and one from someone else whose app you trust?
What are you going to do?

You have no way of varifying whether they are infected or not. In our
previous case, if you had decided that yes, you would trust anything from
GW, you'd have received the tainted update.

Unfortunately, all of us as computer users are exposed to this, and GW is no
more and no less exposed.

You could simply wait some long period of time, to see if any problems are
reported, before allowing any updates to be applied (instead of your
suggested steps I mean). No update can be run without your "ok" to install
and run it, so if you were very upset by the idea you might get something
tainted, keep an eye on the lists and don't be the first to apply updates.

Since 99% of the time updates from GW have been fine, and very helpful, I
will be one of those who will try them and report to others if there are
problems; but it does help to remember that this is no different than our
daily interaction with all types of programs, updates, or even web sites
which we visit.

Hi,
yes, Version 8.5.9 is good.
To make sure only digitally signed apps will ever run, we can do the
following:
1. In the Window-Eyes control Panel, go to Apps / App Management / App
Manager.
2. Make sure the Checkbox "Show more Options" is checked.
3. Activate the "security" button.
4. Set the security Level to "allow only trusted apps."
5. In the list of apps, go to one from GW Micro.
6. Check the "Publisher trusted" Checkbox.
(Repeat steps 5 and 6 for any other Publisher that you trust. Any
other apps will not run.)
7. Activate the "OK" button.
8. Activate the "Close" button to Close App Manager.
Now anything that hasn't been digitally signed by a trusted Publisher
will not run. For example, this would have protected against the
recent Problem.
Kind regards,
Felix Grützmacher
