They need to be 12.
Your scanner isn't sending a check digit. This is changeable by using
the Metrologic utility software, though I'm not sure where this is
anymore. The manual that came with it may also include instructions.

Well, we've established that the scanner is indeed scanning, but we
seem to be getting a lot of wrong length error messages. Just how
many digits should be in a barcode?
We are getting an 11-character code back from the scan.
Not sure what to try now other than to call tech support as Richard
Gurner has suggested.
Also, is the barcode only made up of number or are there combinations
of numbers and letters. I have a feeling we may actually be finding
some sort of serial number or some such thing.
