I've seen a very neat captcha, if this would also solve your problem, which
gave you a simple arithmetic expression to solve, and then you typed in the
result.  In fact, I think it was another wiki.

New account creation had been disabled because it was being abused. I've
since put a mechanism in place which allows anyone to sign up, but the
account request has to be approved before the account gets activated.

So, now, on the main page, there's a "sign up for an account" link. You can
also access the account request link from the Log in page. Thirdly, just go
to http://www.gwmicro.com/mediawiki/index.php/Special:RequestAccount.

Once your request has been approved, assuming you've not crossed me in any
way (<grin>), you can edit away.
