Hi David, because of this problem, I think it's better as a scripter, if you try to avoid using hotkeys. that may mean putting configuration options in your scripts help dialog, or in the scripts menu, when all you wanted the hotkey for was to change a configuration item of your script. besides the possible conflicts, it's just plane rough on users to tell them to remember dozens, which could run into hundreds, of hotkey combinations; some are global, and some are application specific, and the user has to remember which is which. Before all the email responses start listing all the places where nothing but a hotkey will do, I'll stipulate that's true. but when you can find a place where something else will do, use the something else is all I'm suggesting. In some of my scripts, I've experimented with tying my options to the set file settings for related functionality. it's just one more attempt to find alternatives to hotkeys. Chip
_____ From: David [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, April 23, 2010 4:35 PM To: Scripting List WE Subject: Which hotkeys are taken When starting out on a new scripting project, it might often be a challenge to find a good hotkey, that will be used by default to initiate the script. Sometimes, you find yourself writing a script, that uses a hotkey, that others wanted to use, or already are using, as well. Of course, when releasing a script, you want your default hotkey not to conflict with any other scripts. I just thought, that it might have been an idea, if there was somewhere to look up a list, of which hotkeys are already 'taken' or occupied by default. How about a spot on the WIKI, or something? Or, could it even be so, that in the process of registering and uploading a new script - or version of a script - to the SC, you would have to fill in a field holding info as to which hotkeys your script occupies by default. And then, the server would automatically register these hotkeys in a list, that new scripters quickly could access, and make sure that they pick an 'available' hotkey for their project. Anyone have som feedback on the idea? _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter <http://www.spamfighter.com/len> . We are a community of 7 million users fighting spam.
