As many of you might have noticed, there recently was a change from Microsoft
in the way they store the Cookies on your computer. Back in time, each cookie
would have a somehow meaningful name, that would give you the chance of
determining if this was a cookie that you needed, or wanted to keep on your
system. Since the update, that Microsoft let out a few weeks agothis has
changed. Your cookies now will have a rather cryptic filename.
Thing is, that the cookies still will hold information, as to which website is
their owner. So, for instance, the cookies that hold information about your
activity on EBay, will still hold the info, that this cookie relates to EBay.
Same with cookies for Google, Microsoft, your local netshop, advertising
websites, or any other cookie that has been thrown on your system, during your
browsing activity. Sometimes these cookies can cause instability problems, and
even affect your screen reader's ability to perform as usual.
Since there is no easy way to determine if you want a given cookie on your
system, due to the filename's being cryptized, it would mean that you would
have to delete ALL cookies off from your system, to reinstate proper behavior
in such cases. I have written a small app, that gives you easy access to the
list of cookies currently on your system. Pressing the hotkey - by default
Ctrl-Win-C - you will be presented with a list of all currently stored cookies.
Arrowing through the list, you will have the chance of deleting any unwanted
cookies, by pressing Alt-D. The list won't bother you with any filenames at
all. You will be given the name of the website that 'owns' the individual
cookie. So, your cookie from EBay, would be presented in the list as EBay.ca,
or www.ebay.com, or the like. This way, you should have an easy and intuitive
way of determining which cookies are currently on your user profile. You won't
even have to know, where on your system the cookies are archived, since the app
tends to get the complete folder- and filename for you, automatically.
I now have the app ready for testing. Before letting it loose on the App
Central, I would greatly have appreciated if it could be tested thoroughly
though. I would need testers on different flavors of Windows, since things
might behave differently. Also, I would greatly enjoy if anyone could give
suggestions as to whether this is of any help, and if it can be improved, so
that the final release will be as complete as possible.
If anyone wants to participate, please send me a note off-list, at:
[email protected]
. Please, let me know, which Windows version you are using, that I can make
sure we get the thing tested on all versions from XP and up.
This is the one and final call for testers on the app. If I do get no feedback,
and/or too few people show their interest for the project, I will drop it from
the general community, and only be enjoying the benefits of the app for
personal use.
