If you work with raw data often you might wish to enable

Automatically offer raw data import of unknown files

in the raw import dialog.

Repeatedly importing the same raw data file is, generally, impractical
so it is best to save the data in another (automatically loaded) format.

It stores the physical dimensions of one of the images along with the
information required by the Thumbnail Management Standard into the
thumbnail. It is a slight abuse of the standard as Gwyddion data can
contain an arbitrary number of ‘images’ (and other things) with
different properties, but a thumbnail of one of them is probably better
than nothing.

I try to keep file loading in Gwyddion unprejudiced: it does not use any
side information about the file as it is inherently unreliable. The
content of the file at the moment you try to load it determines how it
will be loaded.

This can be enabled as descibed above.
