Then please try to get a backtrace and/or run Gwyddion under valgrind
(better w/o pygwy as it causes lots of false alarms) and send me the
log.

No, JPEGs should be previewed fully. Does it show something like
jpeg, 1 ch
below the file name at the top of the preview? If it does then it
should be impossible to see something different in the preview and after
actually loading the file (except that the preview does not know the
intended physical dimensions for plain pixmap images).
