As Lewis wrote, using Ctrl-click is not that difficult. Also I can see thumbnails in file managers and a tiny thumbnail next to each file name in the file dialog itself which should be sufficient (IMO). As I wrote some time ago this is surely can work also in other environments than XFce and GNOME but I cannot do system integration to environments I do not use.
