There is no way to have more tools active at once without breaking the tool interface completely (which cannot be done in the stable series). The active tool ‘owns’ the current channel: it decides what kind of selections can be made on the data, etc. So this would inevitably lead to conflicts. Having multiple tool windows open permanently but inactive except one could perhaps work somehow (tools must be able to handle the no-current-data situation so we would pretend there are no current data to the inactive tools), but IMO would be rahter confusing. Especially if you, for instance, have several tool windows open and close the active one. What about just remembering the tool window position? I'm not sure how that should be enabled/disabled but it might work. Of course, manual window realignment is probably really necessary if the window manager is incapable of any kind of smart placement (such as the MS Windows one)... Though neither solves the ‘looking at profiles while doing something else with the data’ case.
