Unfortunately, tear-off menus have been kind-of-broken in Gtk+ for quite some time on all platforms and there seems to be little interest in fixing them as they are deprecated in Gtk+ 3. Even The GIMP does not use tear-off menus anymore... So I'm inclined to just remove them.
