When I covered some boxes, I tried the lids on to see how much wiggle room they 
had. If not enough, paint the top edge of the box and the inside lid edge. Then 
cover the rest with the fabric.

So, I can use up some of the William Morris fabric I bought online that 
turned out to have motifs the correct size for drapes, not a human. That 
sounds great, but it does put more thickness at the top for the lid to 
fit over.  So you just only cover below the lid area or what?
