this is another plot spoiler, so...

spoiler space...

another reason for the weirdness of that corset may be that there were
some action scenes coming up, as she and casanova make a dramatic
escape from the scaffold. there may have been need for a harness or
some sort of safety gear or padding underneath? (they jump from the
scaffold onto a moving carriage/horses.) i was watching a sort of
"behind the scenes" thing the other day, and it looked like they were
doing their own stunts, but i fully admit i was only really giving
close attention to heath ledger at that point :) just playing devil's
advocate, as i agree it looks really ugly in that photo.

i wish i were an actress in these movies -- i would be so happy to get
to wear corsets and get paid for it!

i loved the film, and because the plot and humor were a bit
anachronistic in flavor, i expected and allowed for inaccuracies in
the costuming. (there was also a dress at one point with a very
19th-century-looking back bustle thing going on, which also jarred me
for a second.) i think since the film as a whole was not aiming to be
a recreation of real historical events, then just giving the "look and
feel" of the period is appropriate. it's just supposed to be a fun
romantic comedy with pretty outfits, after all :)
