I think it has something to do with general body shape, as well. I have a
friend whose torso is an almost waistless cylinder, no matter what her size
(and her weight fluctuates quite a bit, so I've seen her at different
sizes). She wouldn't get nearly the contrast between hip/bust/waist that I
would (me being of the hourglassy variety, although currently in the giant
economy size).
I've never used corsetry for anything except 16th century costuming (and a
teensy bit of early Cavalier), but always thought it'd be interesting,
especially if I were of a more average weight, to try something Victorian or
Edwardian, just for curiosity. I don't know that I'm structurally suited to
do 18th c. stuff, although I've always loved the clothing. My shoulders are
broad enough that I'd probably look like a peasant masquerading as a lady
;o) (Gotta love family genetics! <g>) In an Elizabethan or Tudor style,
though, I get excellent contrast between bust and waist--might need a
bumroll or padded cartridge pleats in the skirt, though, as I'm more tummy
than behind.

Is that padding, or you?' It was *all* me. ;-P

muscle mass underneath whatever surface body fat they have. One friend of
mine, despite the fact that she looks like she would have a LOT of squish,
doesn't, ( she was very athletic until injury stopped her, which was when
she started to put on weight ) and another lady I know who is much slimmer,
has quite a lot of squish.
