I wouldn't worry about using something else. This was my first leather project and while I think there are some things I would change, it was very easy. I made a mock-up first and then cut right into it. I don't have any pics of it to show you but leather really is quite easy to work with. I'm planning all kinds of leather things just because the coat turned out so well.
