I did a report on the sinking of the Titanic in school once and was appalled
at the stories--like the one where an upper crust matron refused to let
lower class people into her lifeboat, resulting in a boat that could hold 40
had only 14. I don't know if this is true, but it's possible, given the
snobbishness of some people.

Considering how many people tragically died on the Titanic, and
considering that something is known about the more upper-crust ones at
least, I was amazed the producers didn't use a real story with main
characters who were really there. I once read an amazing account of the
sinking by a telegraph operator who stayed almost to the end, but
survived because he was picked up by an overloaded lifeboat crewed by
passengers so nautically clueless he'd had to help them get the lifeboat
off the deck earlier (they felt they owed him one). And there must be
other memoirs too.

I refused to see the film for a long time because of the lack of a
"real" story, but I did eventually. I thought it was OK, although Rose
and Jack were too sappy. At the end of the film, when she drops the
megadiamond into the ocean, I thought, "She's had this thing for decades
and _still_ hasn't figured out how to fence it?"

The clothes weren't perfect, but they weren't bad. I've had a
lightweight wool 1910s women's suit around for years, meaning to reline
it, that is almost exactly like one Rose or her mother (I forget which)
was wearing to get on board the ship.
