When labor is cheaper than materials......who cares about extra work?

I once had to make for a film exact copies of a 1940s short sleeved
commercial work shirt. What does this have to do with anything?...stay with
me....
The shirt was just like any shirt you might buy today. But it had, on the
back of the short sleeve, a seam about 4" from the underarm seam. Huh? Anyway
as
I cut it out on the fold I realized you could place the sleeve beside one
of the other pieces [the front I think] and get it cut out but for about 4"
that ran off the selvage. That little 4" piece of sleeve could be gotten out of

the left overs beside the back piece. The result of this piecing of the
sleeve was that it saved fabric. If you didn't piece the sleeve you had to
drop
down the length of fabric and cut it out all by itself below the other pieces
[which is exactly what we do nowadays]
IOW...it was more cost effective to have workers sew another seam than to
use up more fabric....even in the 1940s.
