The potential for good costumes and interesting writing and accurate history exists. And that is the issue, I think. The War of 1812 production on the History Channel was a little disappointing, too--not really awful, but just not as good as I was expecting. With the resources of the History Channel, and the Ph.D. historian consultants they tout, and of course their advertising, we expect everything to be top notch! Ann Wass Usually I dont' take exception to anything the History Channel does, much like simplicity and other main-stream historical patterns, it gets people interested in in stuff ...history/costumes/historic dressing. Some people stay at that Costume/History Channel level, but it hooks some others and they go onto details of History beyond the Modren Marvels or 18c cent beyond the bicentennial look. Like most addicts, I love to see other people turned on by what I'm addicted to I just wish there were some way of identifing the different levels, and I probably shouldn't worry about that, because most of the people I talk to, seem to have a somewhat discerning eye for the difference between a "Farby Barbie" and a well researched garment Plus which nobody would watch if they said it was "just for entertainment" or "here's a ripping yarn" or something along those lines. Though the pattern companies seem to be able to deal with it intellegently and sincerely, with Halloween Costumes vs. Costume Historian lines and reenactor suitable vs. fantasy garments pretty clearly identified.
