pretty much anything by the cunningtons
(some books (eg occupational costume) use a lot of re-drawings, but they're
generally faithful to the original, and usually impeccably sourced, and not too
hard to find if you want to look at the originals)
the visual history of costume books
(either the one volume version, or if you can find them, the separate volumes
(by various authors, published by batsford and now out of print)
several books on different aspects of costume by Aileen Ribeiro
