Thee have been so many movies made of this and I think most, if not
all, are more or less accurate in regard to periods. Of course, each
one is going to be qualified by the actual decade it was made in, so
the 1950 version will have a 1950s flair, and so forth, I don't
recommend you see any of them, but look instead at costume history
books from the appropriate decades, which, it appears, are about 1800s
to 1840s. I think I was off a decade or 2 in my original post.
I generally don't like to be influenced by movies when I design a play,
as I prefer to come up with my own ideas, unless, of course, I am
really stuck on a particular costume and then I'll watch the movie to
see what the designer came up with.
