Hi all!
Friends of ours have invited us to join an encampment for a week-long event.
They're a Japanese encampment, but were looking to include a couple of
Portuguese "outsiders". They're looking for something like the so-called
"nanban traders", around 1575-1600. Sooo... I've started looking for info.
My first question, of course, is: what would they wear? I can find tons of
information on Spain for these years (and gorgeous outfits too), but nothing
on Portugal. Well... yes and no. Royalty seems to be interchangeable between
Spain and Portugal at the time -- or is this just a case of my having not
done enough research yet and getting the wrong impression?
In any case, even if I can find portraits of royalty, this does not tell me
what traders would be wearing. There is even less information about Macau
(which would have been a logical base of operations for what I'm
considering).
Basically, I'm asking for pointers. If anybody has experience about those
subjects and can suggest websites, books, patterns, even efficient Google
search word combinations, I'd be very greatful. At present, I'm not turning
up much except for a nice Wikipedia article. Which doesn't help me build
clothing for two people for a week-long event!
Thank you!
