I always thought of it as grey but....

for early 20th century, I have a silk floss booklet:

"Richard'sons Standard Colors, sewing silk and Button Hole Twist" 1909
4 pages of silk floss samples, about 375 of them, with names, includes
an incert for shades of the 1909 season.

They have a color called "dove" and it is a medium brown.

Some of my favorite color names:

Dregs of Wine (deep wine color)
Naiad (pale green)
Tally Ho (light brown/ochre)
Lizard (a deep green)

Dear knowledgeable ones,
A Victorian literature scholar of my acquaintance has asked me what
color I think "dove-colored", as used in Little Women, would have
been. She always thought white, because of white doves of peace, but
I have always assumed a light gray, like the color now called "dove
gray". Does anyone have anything definitive on this?
Thank you!
Lauren
