For machine sewing I just use the guide on the platen. For hand sewing, yes, I measure as often as needed (very often on curves, twice or three times on the straight) and connect the dots with pencil. I'll bet you could take one of those little compasses we used to get in our pencil boxes, set the gap between the pencil point and the pointed leg to 5/8, and use the point as a guide along the edge of the piece, marking 5/8 inch with the pencil end as you go. If it's a better-grade compass like the ones my father the engineer used to have, there's a nut at the end you can tighten to keep the measurement constant. I've never tried this, just thought of it this minute--but boyoboy it sounds easy, doesn't it? (Probably a lot of people on this list have thought of it long ago...?)

Does anyone know of a clever tool for measuring the 5/8 all round the outside? I usually draw it on the cloth with a pencil, but the measurements get a bit, um, impressionistic on some of the curves.

And I agree with the person who expressed frustration that the stitching lines aren't marked on patterns anymore. What a pain to have to measure 5/8"
