definitely not an evening dress. looks like an afternoon / walking / visiting (you get the idea!) dress to me. it's always possible that it had / has a second bodice that was cut as an evening bodice that they aren't showing - there are several dresses that do - but as it's pictured, it's not a formal evening dress
