The book i have it from, says silk gauge. What i think it is - is a light transparent silk, like chiffon or something like that!
Its the book "18th century embroidery teckniques"

Can you describe this silk gauge? I've not heard of
that kind of silk before (but I know my knowledge of
various silks is limited).
